Development Activities

The development activities carried out at the Service Foundation for People with an Intellectual Disability aim to create person-centred, practical and high quality solutions which take into account the needs and life circumstances of people with special needs and their families. The work is done in a person-centred way in partnership with families, local authorities and other stakeholders.

Developing Housing Services

Moving out -training

The purpose of the moving out-training is to offer support to the person with special needs who is planning to move, as well as to other family members and to any support staff involved. The aim is to prepare everyone for a smooth transition and to help the person with an intellectual disability to have a successful move to the new home.

Personal assistant service

The personal assistant service creates regional models of service provision enabling adults living in their own homes to lead an independent life. The goal is for the person with an intellectual disability to lead a fulfilling life, which includes participation, independence and full citizenship.

Tailored support models for living

The tailored support models for living –project (2008 - 2012) creates real alternatives for supported living. The aim is to develop tailored solutions, which complement the existing service provision for people with an intellectual disability and provide innovation to the structure of service provision as a whole.

Quality training and better housing

The quality training and better housing –project (2009 - 2011) will produce a training model for improving the quality of housing services regionally and a template for service delivery based on clients’ needs.

Other Development Activities

Support for elderly carers

Families where a person with an intellectual disability continues to live with elderly carers are supported through group-based advice and guidance. The aim is to help these families to cope by offering them support according to their needs and wishes.

Safety training

The safety training (2007 - 2009) courses hope to increase one’s independence and prevent alienation. The courses pass on knowledge and skills relating to everyday safety. Get to know the army –activity camps offer a glimpse to the military life and teach the basics of a national defence system.

Day services development

The day services development project lays down the groundwork, which enables planning on tailored day service provision to begin. It does so by capitalising on local partnerships and by organising training sessions that promote expertise and professional know-how.

Art teaching

Vimmart – college is a school for equality arts located in Tampere. The college is run by the Service Foundation for People with an Intellectual Disability and two other non-profit-making organisations. The teaching is based on a general syllabus and offers basic studies in music, art and handicrafts.

Interpretation service for speech impaired

The interpretation service for those with speech impairments includes assistance and support with a range of interpreting and communication tasks in accordance with the disability legislation. The service supports clients to express themselves, to understand others and to cope with everyday situations.
